Alright Minnesota — Labor Day’s in the rearview and September just remembered it has a job. Tonight’s the soggy handshake; tomorrow’s the breezy “okay we can fish” apology; Friday’s already whispering about another round of rain like it forgot we just did this.
Tonight (Mon Sep 14 into early Tue): Widespread rain is still working west-to-east across the state. NWS Twin Cities says most spots should wrap up with at least ~0.5”, and southern Minnesota into western Wisconsin is the wetter neighborhood — locally over an inch, with Rochester’s point forecast calling out 1–2” possible and heavy rain language before midnight. Twin Cities: showers/storms likely mainly before midnight (PoP ~60%), then tapering; gusty southwest winds with gusts up toward 30 mph. Duluth/Northland: showers mainly before midnight (PoP 100% in the point forecast), breezy SE becoming SW. Duluth HWO flags isolated/scattered embedded storms this evening — small hail ≤½” and ponding on roads/low spots as the main inland concerns, not a classic severe outbreak. Severe weather is not the headline for the Twin Cities side (cool/stable boundary layer per AFD).
Tuesday (Sep 15): The “front’s gone, now the wind’s got opinions” day. Behind the cold front: drier northwest flow, becoming sunny/partly sunny statewide. Twin Cities high near 70, WNW ~15 mph with gusts ~25. Duluth high near 66, west 15–20 with gusts as high as 35. Rochester high near 71, NW gusts ~22. Good boat day if you like a little chop and don’t mind holding your hat — just don’t confuse “dry” with “calm.”
Tuesday night: Quiet and chilly under high pressure. Twin Cities low around 51; Duluth around 48; rural central MN / western WI could dip into the 40s, with Duluth AFD noting mid-30s and patchy frost possible in typical cold spots (widespread frost unlikely). If you’re camping or leaving a wet boat cover out… yeah, that’s a dew/frost conversation with future you.
Wednesday–Thursday (Sep 16–17): The quiet middle of the sandwich. Partly sunny, highs mostly mid-60s north to low/mid-70s south-central (MSP Wed ~73, Thu ~76; Duluth Wed ~64, Thu ~68; Rochester Wed ~71, Thu ~75). A few scattered shower chances creep back Wed night / Thu night as the next system ideas set up — not a washout yet, more of a “keep one eye on the radar” vibe. Statewide tabular (SFT) still shows mostly Ptcldy / Sunny language midweek before Friday gets loud.
Looking ahead (not the main window, but the plot twist): Friday into Saturday is where NWS is leaning unsettled again — Twin Cities AFD: best chance for widespread rain and a few stronger thunderstorms Friday, with ensemble guidance trending wetter. Point forecasts: MSP/Rochester PoP 80–90% Fri with showers/storms language. Exact where the boundary sets up is still the uncertainty knob — don’t marry a Friday launch plan yet.
Lake Superior (nearshore) — serious note
NWS Duluth nearshore marine (issued ~558 PM CDT Mon Sep 14): Gale Warning in effect Tuesday morning through Tuesday afternoon for most western Superior nearshore zones (Grand Portage through WI nearshore segments). Tuesday: west winds with gales up to ~40 knots (locally higher language on some Apostle/outer zones), waves building — e.g. Grand Portage–Grand Marais 7–10 ft, occasionally higher. Small Craft Advisories also in play late Mon into Tue before/around the gale period. Do not argue with Superior on Tuesday. Wednesday looks much quieter (waves ~1 ft or less in the nearshore product).
Safety (verified public notes only)
- Tonight: rain + gusty winds; southern MN heavier rainfall potential; Northland: ponding / small-hail concern with embedded storms (DLH HWO).
- Tuesday inland: breezy (gusts 25–35+ mph depending on spot) — small craft / open-water comfort call even without a lake advisory.
- Tuesday Superior: Gale Warning — stay off or treat as no-go unless you’re built for it and watching official marine products.
- Tue night: chilly; patchy frost possible in favored cold spots north/central (uncertainty noted).
- Friday system: rain/storm chances rising — recheck weather.gov later in the week.
- MPX land HWO (as of 221 PM CDT Mon): no hazardous weather expected Day 1 or Days 2–7 at that issuance — still use the point forecasts + AFD for rain/wind details; products update.
No lake water temperatures, ice-out, stocking, or bite claims in this digest — we didn’t find solid public numbers for those, so we’re not inventing any.
