The tray
Northern pike spoons & spinnerbaits
Weedless spoons and Northland spinnerbaits for Minnesota cabbage, reeds, and the days a northern just wants flash.
Johnson Standard Minnow Spoon, Gold, 2-3/4 inch, 3/4 oz
Johnson
The original weedless wonder still earns a seat in Minnesota pike boats. Cast it through pads and cabbage, keep a steady wobble, and tip it with a trailer if the fish want a little more meal. Gold 3/4 is the listing we can actually buy today.
Minnow silhouette with spoon flash, built to slide through greenery without a speech. Firetiger is the loud outfit for stained summer water when pike are parked in the salad.
Northland Fishing Tackle Reed Runner Single Spin, 1/2 oz
Northland
Bemidji hardware for reeds, rocks, and the kind of cover that eats treble hooks for lunch. Slow-roll it along weed edges or burn it over the tops when the lake feels froggy.
Northland Reed-Runner Magnum Spinnerbait, 3/4 oz, Gold Shiner
Northland
Bigger profile, bigger thump — the Magnum slot for windy days and fish that ignore polite presentations. Gold shiner keeps the flash honest without looking like a nightclub.

Where they live: Weeds, cabbage, shallow bays, and any place a sucker fish made a poor life choice.
When folks chase them: Spring shallows, summer weed edges, late-season when the water gets that serious color.
Northerns are not subtle. They are the uncle who shows up early, eats the dip, and still helps you load the boat.
This is a short species page. We are not going to invent a pike bite so you can spend an afternoon unhooking a toothy roommate you were not emotionally prepared for. Check Water for the rooms, and Gear if you want something that rattles.
What to throw
Pike will eat a lure that looks like it fell off a snowmobile. Still, some types keep showing up in Minnesota boats for a reason.
Spoons. Flash, wobble, and a little chaos. Maynard’s and the old steel-shed spoons belong here. You retrieve it like you mean it, then you pause like you forgot why you came.
Spinnerbaits and in-line spinners. A blade that ticks through cabbage. Blue Fox Vibrax is the coffee-can classic. JB is the Minnesota cousin when you want something that sounds like a toolbox.
Large soft plastics. Swimbaits and big paddletails along a weed edge. It looks like a snack that made a poor life choice.
Crankbaits. A wide wobble that bumps reeds and rocks. If a Rapala can pretend to be injured, a pike will file a claim.
Buzzbaits and other noisy topwater. Warm evenings, shallow bays, and the kind of explosion that makes you forget your sandwich.
If you want hardware we can actually point at, the boat kit on this page is the one-click version. The longer trays live in Northern pike spoons & spinnerbaits. We are still not going to draw you a treasure map.
Rod & reel
Northerns are not subtle. They will eat a lure the size of a snack and then look at you like you owe them rent. Your rod needs backbone for cabbage and a tip that still loads a spoon; your terminal gear needs a leader that survives a mouthful of needles.
A 7’ to 7’6” medium-heavy spinning stick covers most Minnesota bay and weed-edge days. Baitcast is fine if you already throw it well — especially for bigger spinnerbaits — but spinning keeps more people fishing instead of picking birds’ nests out of the guides.
Length: 7’–7’6”
Power / action: Medium-heavy / Fast
Reel: Spinning or baitcast with decent drag
Line: 12–20 lb mono/fluoro or 30–50 braid, plus wire or heavy fluoro leader
Heavier St. Croix MH spinning options and muskie-adjacent casting gear live in the boat kit and the full Pike & muskie heavier setups guide. Bring pliers. Bring humility. Leave the walleye ultralight in the truck.

Berkley Lightning Rod Spinning Fishing Rod, 6'6" Medium/Moderate-Fast (2-piece)
Berkley
The cabin-deck classic for jigging walleye without pretending you just refinanced the boat. Medium power, moderate-fast tip, two pieces for the trunk — wallet-friendly graphite that still tells you when a fish breathes on a Fire-Ball.
Berkley Lightning Rod Spinning Fishing Rod, 5' Ultra-Light/Moderate (2-piece)
Berkley
Short, soft, and honest about bluegill and crappie. Ultra-light power for tubes and tiny jigs when the kids want action and you want a rod that does not cost a second mortgage.
Smooth mid-size spinner for 6'6"–7' rods without the Nasci upcharge. Size 2500 sits in the Minnesota walleye neighborhood; plenty of bearings, Quick-Set anti-reverse, and a price that leaves room for leeches.
Ugly Stik GX2 Spinning Reel and Fishing Rod Combo, 7' Medium-Heavy + Superline
Ugly Stik
Grab-and-go MH spinning combo with Superline already on the spool — the trunk special for a Saturday when you need one rod that can handle a northern surprise. Legendary Ugly toughness, size-50 reel, under the weekend-wallet ceiling.
Abu Garcia Max X Low Profile Baitcast Reel, Right-Hand Box
Abu Garcia
Entry baitcast that does not demand a TED Talk or a second job. MagTrax brakes, graphite frame, right-hand retrieve — practice in the yard, then throw hardware around the cabbage without crying over bird’s nests.
A St. Croix Mojo Bass MH spinning stick for northerns, Mojo and Legend Tournament Musky casting rods, plus a baitcast reel that can handle big line.
St. Croix Rods Mojo Bass Spinning Rod, 7'3" Medium-Heavy/Fast
St. Croix
A medium-heavy spinning stick for northern days when the spoon is the size of a snack and the fish has opinions. Fast tip, real backbone, and Park Falls manners for cabbage edges — the old Triumph MH listings went dark, so this is the MH spinner we can actually buy.
St. Croix Rods Mojo Musky Fishing Rod, 7'10" Medium/Fast
St. Croix
Musky-focused casting blank with the newer handle comfort St. Croix keeps talking about for long figure-eight days. Medium power for bucktails and mid-size rubber — not a fairy tale, just a work stick.
Long grinder stick for covering water when the lake is big and your shoulder already filed a complaint. Heavy line class, serious length — honest about follows, ready when a boat finally shows up.
Beefier baitcast capacity for heavier mono and braid when you are throwing big profiles at pike or muskie. Deep spool, T-Wing line flow, and enough room to keep a long fight from getting awkward.
