Alright Minnesota — Tuesday’s gale-and-frost episode is in the rearview, and Wednesday woke up looking like the state finally remembered how to behave. Don’t get too comfortable though. Friday’s not whispering anymore. It’s clearing its throat like it brought a hose.

Today (Wed Sep 16): Mostly sunny / partly sunny statewide — the “go ahead and launch” chapter. Twin Cities high near 75, Duluth near 64, Rochester near 73. Light winds (calm to E/SE around 5 mph south; Duluth NW becoming E ~5). Twin Cities SFT still shows Sunny/Ptcldy language today before the next wave starts thinking about us.

Tonight (Wed into Thu): Scattered showers creep back as a weak trough swings through — western MN first, then east overnight. NWS Twin Cities: amounts generally light (0.10–0.25” where it hits); MSP point forecast PoP ~50% mainly before 2am. Duluth: slight chance / light amounts, patchy fog possible late. Not a washout. More of a “your windshield might argue with you” night.

Thursday (Sep 17): Quiet middle of the sandwich, a little warmer. Partly sunny / decreasing clouds. MSP high near 78, Duluth near 70 (patchy fog early), Rochester near 76. Another warm-ish day before the moisture train arrives. Thursday night: increasing clouds, chance of showers after midnight south/central (MSP/Rochester PoP ~40%) as the bigger system starts setting the table.

Friday into early Saturday — the main event: This is the upgrade from earlier in the week. NWS Twin Cities AFD (554 AM CDT Wed): widespread soaking rain likely Friday into early Saturday — broad totals of 1 to 2 inches likely, with a narrower strip of 3 to 5+ inches possible. Point forecasts: MSP PoP 100% Friday with heavy rain language and 1–2” possible; Rochester PoP 100% Fri with another 1–2” Fri night possible. Thunderstorms also in the mix after midday south/central. Twin Cities HWO (Days 2–7): several inches possible which may lead to flooding; heaviest axis currently sketched from west-central MN → southern Twin Cities metro → west-central WI / SE MN — still subject to shifts (warm-front / 850-mb low track is the uncertainty knob). Flood watches may eventually be needed per AFD — not issued as of this morning’s products.

Northland gets a different chapter: Duluth AFD says the dry air from the north undercuts the system — sharper gradient, with better odds of ½–1”+ generally south of a Brainerd–Duluth–Bayfield line, and lighter totals farther north. Duluth point forecast Fri PoP only ~50% (breezy E ~15 mph, gusts ~25) — not the same soaking headline as the metro/south.

Saturday: front settles south; drier / quieter for many, though MSP/Rochester still carry leftover shower language early. Another unsettled period possible Sunday into early next week (lower confidence).

Lake Superior (nearshore)

Tuesday’s gale is done. Current nearshore (FZUS53 KDLH, 908 AM CDT Wed Sep 16): quiet Wed–Thu — waves mostly 1 ft or less, light winds, no marine headlines. Thursday night NE starts to freshen a bit (gusts ~20 kt some zones).

Look-ahead that matters: Duluth AFD/HWO — strong east/northeast winds return Friday through Monday at times, especially the southwest arm / Twin Ports. Hazardous conditions for smaller vessels expected at times weekend afternoons–evenings; rip current risk at Twin Ports beaches Fri–Mon. Small (~20%) potential for gales to ~35 kt near Outer Apostles Sunday afternoon — low confidence, watch the next marine updates. No Gale Warning in effect as of this morning’s nearshore product.

Safety (verified public notes only)

  • Wed–Thu inland: generally quiet; light overnight shower chances — not a flood story yet.
  • Friday–early Sat south/central: soaking rain / heavy rain possible; flooding concerns if the heavy axis parks over urban / poor-drainage areas — recheck watches/warnings before you drive or launch.
  • Northland Fri: sharper north–south rain gradient; don’t assume metro totals apply to the Border Country.
  • Superior: quiet now; hazardous NE wind/wave + rip current risk Fri–Mon look-ahead — treat weekend Superior plans as provisional.
  • MPX land HWO Day 1: no hazardous weather expected today/tonight; Days 2–7 carry the heavy-rain/flood language.
  • DLH: Frost Advisory was for early Wed morning Koochiching (expired by mid-morning); patchy frost possible outside that earlier.

No lake water temperatures, ice-out, stocking, or bite claims in this digest — we didn’t find solid public numbers for those, so we’re not inventing any.
