Alright Minnesota — Wednesday’s light shower streaks already did their little windshield tango (some spots got more than expected — St. Cloud/Willmar/Le Sueur corridors saw solid overnight hits). Today’s the calm before the hose. Friday isn’t teasing anymore. NWS Twin Cities just turned the dial from “possible heavy strip” to “yeah, this southern corridor is gonna get wet for real.”
Today (Thu Sep 17): Quiet middle chapter with leftover low clouds and fog burning off slow. Dense Fog Advisory was up this morning for parts of central/north-central MN (until 10 AM CDT). Twin Cities SFT: mostly cloudy / drizzle language early, then clearing late afternoon possible. Highs: MSP near 76, Duluth near 70, Rochester near 73. Light winds. Not a fishing-cancel day — more of a “give the fog a polite hour” day.
Tonight (Thu into Fri): Increasing clouds. Showers start knocking after midnight south/central as the bigger system creeps in from the southwest. MSP PoP ~30% late tonight; heavier stuff waits for Friday.
Friday into early Saturday — the main event (upgraded): NWS Twin Cities AFD (600 AM CDT Thu) and HWO: widespread heavy rain Friday into early Saturday, with amounts in excess of 2–4 inches likely from the southern Twin Cities metro south toward the Minnesota/Iowa border. Twin Cities HWO: heaviest in excess of 3–4 inches expected that same southern-metro-to-border corridor into west-central WI — localized flooding possible, especially urban. Greatest flooding concern: Friday night into early Saturday morning.
Two rounds are coming into focus (CAMs finally chewing on it — still some spread, so treat the exact axis as shiftable):
- Friday daytime: elongated rain shield from west-central MN toward the metro — 1–2”+ where it hangs around longest.
- Later Friday / Fri night: warm-front round farther south across south-central/SE MN into northeast IA — training thunderstorms possible, which is how you get the ugly totals.
Point forecasts (morning Thu products): MSP PoP 100% Friday (showers/t-storms; ~0.75–1” Fri daytime, another ~0.25–0.5” Fri night at the point — area guidance is higher south of the core metro); Rochester PoP 80% Fri / 100% Fri night with heavy rain language and 1–2” possible overnight. Flood watches still not issued as of this morning — NWS has been waving the “may eventually be needed” flag; recheck before you drive ditches or park the truck in a bowl.
Northland: Different movie. Duluth AFD tightens the gradient — 40–60% chance of 1”+ south of a Brainerd–Sandstone–Hayward–Park Falls line; measurable rain odds fade fast north of roughly Walker–Duluth–Mercer. Duluth point: Fri PoP only ~40%, Fri night ~50%, breezy east — not the metro hose. Dry Canadian air undercutting from the north is the villain (or the hero, depending on your roof).
Saturday: Front settles south; drier/quieter for many after morning leftovers (MSP early shower chance ~20%; Rochester lingering ~50% morning). Sunday rain chances have dwindled north (more southerly track) — lower confidence for any early-week shower return.
Lake Superior (nearshore)
Nearshore (FZUS53 KDLH, 617 AM CDT Thu Sep 17): quiet today — waves mostly 1 ft or less. NE starts to freshen tonight (gusts ~20 kt some zones). Friday nearshore still mostly 1–3 ft with E/NE 10–15 kt, gusts 20–25 — headlines not up yet on this issuance.
Look-ahead unchanged in the important way: Duluth AFD/HWO — hazardous NE winds and rip current risk at Twin Ports beaches Friday through Monday (afternoons/evenings especially). Small Craft Advisories will eventually be needed. ~20% chance of gales to ~35 kt near the Outer Apostles Sunday afternoon — low confidence, same as yesterday’s story. No Gale Warning / SCA in effect as of this morning’s nearshore.
Safety (verified public notes only)
- Thursday inland: fog/low clouds early; otherwise quiet — not a flood day.
- Friday–early Sat south/central: heavy rain / 2–4” likely southern metro south; flooding concern peaks Fri night–early Sat — recheck watches/warnings before you drive or launch.
- Northland Fri: sharp gradient; don’t mail metro totals to the Border Country.
- Superior: quiet now; NE wind/wave + Twin Ports rip currents Fri–Mon look-ahead — treat weekend Superior plans as provisional.
- MPX HWO Day 1: no hazardous weather expected today/tonight; Days 2–7 carry the heavy-rain/flood language.
- DLH: Dense Fog Advisory this morning (central/north-central); patchy frost possible again Sunday night / Monday night (look-ahead).
No lake water temperatures, ice-out, stocking, or bite claims in this digest — we didn’t find solid public numbers for those, so we’re not inventing any.
