Alright Minnesota — Thursday’s fog-burn chapter is over. The hose is on. NWS Twin Cities AFD (551 AM CDT Fri) isn’t teasing anymore: widespread steady soaking rain through today, then the ugly round near the Iowa border tonight. Watches and marine headlines that were “eventually” on Thursday morning? They’re here.

Today (Fri Sep 18) — daytime soak

First round is the classic synoptic shield — light to moderate rain for several hours across southern and central Minnesota into western Wisconsin. Twin Cities AFD: fairly widespread 1–2 inches along and south of a roughly Morris–St. Cloud–Chippewa Falls line. Excessive-rain risk with this wave is low — it’s the washout Friday you were promised, not the flash-flood movie yet.

Point forecasts (morning Fri grids): MSP PoP ~100% today (rain then patchy fog / showers-tstorms; high near 61); Rochester PoP 100% with ~0.75–1″ daytime language already baked in; Duluth only ~30% this afternoon and less than a tenth expected at the point — Northland still living a different movie.

Tonight into early Sat — flooding corridor locked in

This is the chapter that changed. Warm front sharpens north of I-80 in Iowa; LLJ rides over it. Twin Cities AFD puts the crosshairs on the MN/IA border from I-35 east — far southeast MN and northeast IA (a lot of that in La Crosse’s yard) under the greatest excessive-rain risk. HREF/REFS PMM language in the AFD goes as high as near 8″ near that border east of I-35 — treat that as guidance extremes, not a guaranteed Albert Lea measurement, but it’s why the watches exist.

Flood Watch (verified):

  • NWS Twin Cities — Freeborn County (Albert Lea and friends) from this evening through Saturday morning. Watch text: daytime steady rain, then training thunderstorms this evening; where storms train, max totals of 5–7″ possible.
  • NWS La Crosse — Flood Watch also up for southeast Minnesota counties including Dodge, Fillmore, Houston, Mower, Olmsted, Winona (plus NE Iowa / SW Wisconsin) this evening into Saturday afternoon.

MPX HWO Day 1 for south-central/southeast zones: storms 5–8 PM with train risk and scattered flash flooding; isolated damaging wind gusts possible. Metro/central HWO Day 1: no hazardous weather expected at this time — soak, not the watch corridor.

Greatest flooding concern window still Friday evening into early Saturday morning (AFD flags roughly 7 PM–1 AM CDT as the highest-risk window in the MPX area). SPC Day 1 Marginal Risk language toward Rochester makes sense with the CAPE; hail ceiling looks water-coated ~1″ — flood is the lead story, not baseball-sized ice.

Rochester point tonight: PoP 100%, heavy rain, 2–3″ possible overnight. MSP tonight: PoP ~90%, 1–2″ new amounts possible at the point — area guidance still higher toward the border.

Axis can still shimmy a county or two. Recheck watches/warnings before you drive ditches or park in a bowl.

Northland — sharp gradient, same villain

Duluth AFD (641 AM / discussion 357 AM CDT Fri): showers spread north today and linger into Saturday morning. Heaviest (30–50% chance of 1″) south of roughly Pine River–Sandstone–Hayward–Phillips. Tight gradient still the story — 40% chance of even a tenth fades north of roughly Park Rapids–Cromwell–Glidden–Woodruff; those lines are only ~40 miles apart. Dry Canadian air undercutting from the Ontario high remains the hero (or villain, depending on your roof). Duluth point totals stay tiny; don’t mail Freeborn numbers to the Border Country.

Saturday–Sunday — dry-out north, leftovers south

Saturday: rain tapers morning for most after leftovers. MSP early PoP ~30% with a tenth to quarter possible; Rochester lingering ~50% morning and can still add half to three-quarters if the back edge hangs. Duluth Saturday basically dry (PoP single digits).

Sunday through midweek (Twin Cities AFD): persistent high north of the Great Lakes keeps dry easterlies — seasonable highs in the 60s, lows 30s/40s. Occasional mid/upper clouds and maybe sprinkles, not a soak return. Duluth: precip chances negligible; frost possible each night Sunday through Wednesday (Monday night coldest look-ahead; ~20% chance of sub-32° in spots NE MN / NW WI — cloudy Sunday night may limit it).

Lake Superior (nearshore)

Headlines are up — that is the meaningful marine change from Thursday’s “eventually.”

  • Small Craft Advisory in effect late this morning through this evening for Grand Marais to Duluth to Port Wing (LSZ141–145). Nearshore (FZUS53 KDLH, 908 AM CDT Fri): NE 15–20 kt, gusts 20–25; Twin Ports waves building 2–4 ft this afternoon.
  • Beach Hazards Statement for Twin Ports beaches (Park Point / Wisconsin Point) from 1 PM CDT this afternoon through late tonight — high rip-current / dangerous swimming risk. Risk eases overnight as winds relax, then looks high again Saturday afternoon/evening as NE rebuilds.
  • Look-ahead: NE/rip risk at Twin Ports continues Saturday through Monday (afternoons/evenings); Sunday still the day with highest waves. Duluth AFD/HWO: ~30% chance of a few hours of gales to ~35 kt Silver Bay–Duluth and eastern Apostles–Saxon Harbor Sunday (was ~20% Outer Apostles in Thursday’s digest — modest bump, same low-confidence vibe). More SCA-type headlines likely over the weekend.

Quiet Thursday nearshore chapter is done. Treat weekend Superior plans as provisional until Sunday’s gale dice settle.

Safety (verified public notes only)

  • Friday daytime inland: widespread soak 1–2″ Morris–St. Cloud south — messy drive, low flash-flood risk with round one.
  • Friday evening–early Sat: Flood Watches Freeborn (MPX) and SE MN (ARX counties listed above) — training / heavy rain; peak concern Fri night–early Sat AM. Recheck warnings before you launch or drive low water.
  • Metro vs border: don’t assume southern-metro totals equal Freeborn / I-35-east border extremes — axis has focused southeast.
  • Northland Fri: sharp gradient; Duluth PoP modest.
  • Superior: SCA + Beach Hazards in effect today; NE/rip Twin Ports Fri–Mon look-ahead; ~30% Outer/eastern Apostles gale Sunday — low confidence.
  • Frost look-ahead Sun–Wed nights Northland / western WI possible (not a Friday story).

No lake water temperatures, ice-out, stocking, or bite claims in this digest — we didn’t find solid public numbers for those, so we’re not inventing any.
