mnFISHON Conditions — Sep 23–25, 2026 (Wed–Fri)

Public NWS/NOAA cues only. No lake temps claimed.

Alright Minnesota — the Mon–Wed dry chapter is clocking out like a guy who swore he’d only stay for one beer. Wednesday’s still the quiet sunny one. Then the faucet remembers it has a job overnight into Thursday — light showers, west and central first, east still fighting dry Great Lakes air. Friday’s the cloudy coffee-break day before another shower look Saturday. Nobody’s talking hose-weekend 2.0. Just autumn drip-and-dry.

Wednesday (Sep 23) — last clean dry day of the stretch

NWS Twin Cities AFD (550 AM CDT Wed / discussion 232 AM): closed high near Superior / surface high parked over Quebec keeps dry southeast flow today. Deeper moisture and precip stay parked in the Dakotas until after dark. Biggest model change overnight: rain arrival slowed — even western MN waits until after midnight.

Point forecasts (NWS MapClick ~morning Wed):

  • MSP sunny, high near 67, SSE 5–10 mph
  • Rochester mostly sunny, high near 63
  • Brainerd mostly sunny, high near 64
  • Duluth sunny but cooler under onshore E, high near 59, E 5–15 mph; North Shore stays upper 50s

MPX watches/warnings: NONE. HWO MPX (239 AM CDT): no hazardous weather Day 1 or Days 2–7.

Wednesday night into Thursday — rain returns, west > east

Twin Cities AFD: moisture plume lays into western MN overnight. Widespread showers develop in the LLJ late tonight, maybe an embedded storm or two — then the shield falls apart Thursday as it runs into dry Great Lakes air. PoPs highest west; eastward extent weaker (MSP TAF outlook kept dry for now with only a slight chance of sprinkles Thursday morning).

Duluth AFD (640 AM CDT Wed / discussion 310 AM): showers spread west → east after midnight through Thursday. Amounts generally ½ inch or less; northwest WI may stay dry. Recent runs bump Brainerd Lakes → International Falls higher (Brainerd area maybe up toward ¾” — treat as guidance, not gospel). Highs Thursday upper 50s to mid 60s under clouds (MSP ~64 PoP ~35%; Brainerd ~61 PoP ~80%; Duluth ~61 PoP ~50%; Rochester mostly cloudy, PoP only ~10%).

Angler read: west/central get the wetting; east-central / Twin Cities / SE may stay mostly a cloud day with light or nil. Not a severe or flood chapter — MPX/DLH both low on hazardous weather.

Friday — cloudy break, a little milder

Southerly return flow + warmer airmass: highs 60s to low 70s Northland (DLH), upper 60s metro (MSP ~68). Mostly cloudy, little/no rain Friday proper. Twin Cities calls Friday a cloudy break before a repeat LLJ shower batch Friday night into Saturday — Saturday not a washout, but clouds/showers keep highs more low 60s, and PoPs climb again (MSP Sat PoP ~80% in the morning point forecast). Great Lakes high still makes life harder for rain once you push toward WI.

Early next week: mild mid 60s–low 70s with off-and-on shower chances; a more defined boundary Mon night/Tue still has spread. Don’t marry that yet.

Frost — last crisp morning, then the slap eases

Duluth AFD: Frost Advisory until 8 AM CDT Wednesday for inland Northland away from Superior (patchy frost where skies stayed clear; low/mid 30s north of the Iron Range). By mid-morning that’s done. High slides east; southerly return flow tonight means no more freeze-headline chapter in the near term — tonight’s story is clouds and rain chances, not tomatoes.

MPX HWO: no frost/freeze headlines called for the CWA.

Lake Superior (nearshore) — Beach Hazards today; SCA held off

Verified Wed morning (AFD DLH marine + CFW 325 AM CDT + api.weather.gov):

  • Beach Hazards Statement for Park Point / Wisconsin Point from noon CDT today through this evening — dangerous swimming / high rip-current risk. Stay out of the water; piers and breakwalls are not your friend.
  • No Small Craft Advisory in effect at issuance. Terrain funneling may gust ~20 kt southwest arm with waves 1–3 ft this afternoon/evening — AFD/HWO say an SCA may still be needed, but conditions were held just under criteria. Not the Mon–Tue SCA elbows.
  • Winds ease and veer more southerly late tonight into Thursday; waves subside toward 1 ft or less Thursday afternoon. Friday looks relatively quiet marine-side.

North Shore stays the calmer cousin under lighter easterlies vs Twin Ports rip zone.

Angler-week cheat sheet (Wed–Fri)

No lake water temperatures, ice-out, stocking, or bite claims in this digest — we didn’t find solid public numbers for those, so we’re not inventing any.
