Public NWS/NOAA cues only. No lake temps claimed.
Look, Minnesota. Last night did the tomato paperwork up north. This morning’s Freeze Warning and Frost Advisories from Thursday night have clocked out. Friday is the bluebird apology day — sunny, dry, low 60s. Then the Arrowhead gets another crisp round tonight (narrower this time), Saturday sneaks in some light Borderlands rain, and Sunday night is still circling the drain for a bigger freeze. October’s doing that thing where it can’t decide if it’s nice or mean, so it does both.
Friday (Oct 2): sunny, dry, gloves optional inland
Last night’s headlines (Freeze Warning for Koochiching / North & Central St. Louis, plus the broader Frost Advisories) ran through 9 AM CDT Friday and are done. Spotty freeze already showed up where winds cut off overnight (DLH AFD).
Today: sunny statewide. Highs around 60 to low 60s (MSP ~64, Rochester ~61, Brainerd ~59, Duluth ~58). Twin Cities NWS notes ideal radiational cooling left central MN in the 30s this morning with patchy frost possible in rural low spots — no MPX headlines, just a heads-up for the garden.
North Shore: a few hours of gusts to ~30 mph in downsloping valleys through mid-day, then winds go nearly calm by late afternoon (DLH). Inland is lighter.
Frost / freeze tonight — second round, more limited (ISSUED)
This is the upgrade from the live card’s “possible Fri night” look-ahead.
Freeze Warning — 9 PM Friday to 7 AM CDT Saturday (NWS Duluth):
- Iron County, WI
- Lows as low as ~28. Sensitive vegetation and unprotected plumbing can take a hit. DLH puts an 80–90% chance of sub-freezing there.
Frost Advisory — 9 PM Friday to 7 AM CDT Saturday (NWS Duluth):
- MN: Northern Cook/Northern Lake; high terrain of Southern Cook / North Shore away from the immediate lakeshore
- WI: Ashland, Price
- Temps as low as ~32–34. Shoreline towns stay milder (upper 30s). Brainerd Lakes to Leech Lake: no frost concern Friday night — clouds and mixing kill it.
HWO Duluth: a widespread freeze is possible Sunday night into Monday morning, and “widespread freeze warning headlines may be needed” then — still look-ahead, not issued. Exception may be Brainerd Lakes / central MN only mid-30s. Cover what you care about twice this weekend up north.
MPX CWA: no frost/freeze headlines. HWO clear Day 1 and Days 2–7.
Saturday (Oct 3): light showers, still a north story
Shortwave rides the International Border Friday night into Saturday. DLH: light/spotty showers 30–50% for the Iron Range northward early Saturday morning; highly localized spots maybe a couple tenths. Cold front Saturday afternoon spreads shower chances south, reaching northwest Wisconsin by Saturday evening.
Twin Cities AFD: best chance Saturday evening as the front crosses eastern MN / western WI. Most places under 0.10”, maybe 0.1–0.25” at best; many stay dry. Highs mid/upper 60s, western/southern MN possibly near 70, with south winds (gusts 20–25 kt early Sat morning at MN terminals per MPX aviation).
Point PoPs: MSP ~45–50% Sat/Sat night; Duluth ~35%; Brainerd ~20%; Rochester mostly dry (~2–10%). Same general “light, north-favored” read as the live card — just a bit more evening spread south with the front.
Sunday–Monday: cool front, then the next freeze look
- Sunday: cooler northwest flow, highs low/mid 60s. Breezy north winds gusting 25–30 mph mid-day into early evening up north (DLH). Sunny and fishable if you dress for it.
- Sunday night–Monday morning: best freeze chance of the stretch for most of the Northland. Headlines not out yet — watch the Saturday night AFD.
- Monday: dry, seasonable, low 60s. Then a warming trend Tuesday–Wednesday toward upper 60s / low 70s with little rain (10–20% at most). Quiet pattern.
No Flood Watch. No severe weather.
Lake Superior (nearshore)
Small Craft Advisory until 1 PM CDT Friday for Grand Marais to Two Harbors (LSZ141–143) — NW 10–15 kt, gusts to 25 kt. That’s the leftover edge of Thursday’s wind; it should relax this afternoon.
Look-ahead (DLH marine + HWO): light tonight; southerly increase Saturday with possible SCAs (highest confidence Grand Portage; a few South Shore zones maybe). Behind Saturday’s front, NW gusts 25–30 kt Saturday night into Sunday — more SCAs likely. HWO: “multiple days of breezy winds… will likely need multiple time periods of Small Craft Advisories.” Nothing issued yet for those later windows.

No lake water temperatures, ice, stocking or bite claims in this digest. We didn’t find solid public numbers for those, so we’re not inventing any. Anyway: fish the sunshine today, tuck the Arrowhead basil before 9 PM, and keep one eye on Sunday night’s freeze talk. The water will still be there when the high moves on.
