MN Fish On Conditions — Oct 5–9, 2026 (Mon–Fri)
Source: NWS Twin Cities / NWS Duluth
Public NWS/NOAA cues only. No lake temps claimed.
Look, Minnesota. The weekend freeze look-ahead from Friday’s card? It showed up. Freeze Warnings and Frost Advisories ran through about 9 AM CDT Monday across a big chunk of the Northland and even dipped into central Minnesota and western Wisconsin. By mid-morning those are done. Now the plot flips: mild today, a weirdly warm Tuesday that smells like somebody left July in the microwave, then a front and a quieter midweek. Superior already has Small Craft Advisories on the books for Tuesday. Bring the short sleeves and the rain jacket. October math.
Monday morning freeze — issued, now expired
What Friday’s card only called a “look-ahead” actually landed:
- NWS Duluth: Freeze Warning and Frost Advisories through 9 AM CDT Monday for much of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin (Freeze Warning covered the colder inland/Borderlands zones including Koochiching, North & Central St. Louis, Northern Cook/Lake, North Itasca, plus Ashland & Iron Counties WI; Frost Advisories elsewhere across the Northland CWA).
- NWS Twin Cities: Frost Advisory through 9 AM for Benton, Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Todd, and neighboring western WI counties (Barron, Chippewa, Eau Claire, Polk, Rusk) — rural low spots in the mid-30s.
As of ~9:24 AM CDT, those headlines are off the board (api.weather.gov: no active MN frost/freeze). Patchy frost already did its thing in the low spots. Tomatoes that made it this far deserve a medal.
Monday (Oct 5): mild rebound, light evening showers north
Highs rebound to the mid/upper 60s south and central (MSP ~69, Rochester ~68), cooler near the lake (Duluth ~58, Brainerd ~62) under increasing southeast flow.
Light showers late afternoon/evening, mainly north of I-94 / central MN and west-central WI (MPX), and across the Northland with the warm front (DLH). Amounts look light — often a tenth or two, locally maybe a quarter — fighting low-level dry air. Thunder not expected. Many spots stay dry; Brainerd PoP ~25%, Duluth tonight ~35%, metro only a slight chance.
Tuesday (Oct 6): the warm one
This is the chapter anglers will talk about at the bait shop.
- Twin Cities AFD (748 AM CDT Mon): well-above normal — highs near 80 possible in the metro, low 80s southwest Minnesota, breezy dry southwest winds and deep mixing under shortwave ridging.
- Duluth: unseasonably warm, about 15° above average — Duluth point ~72, Brainerd ~73, plentiful sun in the warm sector before a cold front later Tuesday afternoon/night.
- Rochester ~78. Dress like you forgot what month it is. Then don’t.
Front Tuesday night brings a modest cool-down for Wednesday–Friday, still near seasonal mid/upper 60s (MSP Wed ~71, Thu–Fri ~67). Dry under northwest flow midweek; maybe a few sprinkles Wednesday with an upper trough (DLH), otherwise quiet. Southerly return next weekend with 70s again and only sparse rain chances. Early next week: hints of colder air behind a weekend low — mark uncertain.
Frost look-ahead (rest of the week)
- HWO Duluth: additional patchy frost possible early Tuesday morning tip of the Arrowhead; more widespread frost/freeze possible later in the workweek (AFD flags cool nights Thursday and Friday nights).
- No new frost/freeze headlines issued yet beyond this morning’s expired set. MPX HWO clear Days 1–7 — central/south stay mild enough.
- Protect what you still care about up north before those later nights; don’t invent a Freeze Warning that isn’t posted.
Lake Superior (nearshore) — SCAs issued for Tuesday
No marine headlines in effect Monday daytime. Small Craft Advisories are already issued for Tuesday:
- Grand Portage to Grand Marais: 3 AM–4 PM CDT Tuesday — S 10–15 kt, gusts to 25 kt, waves 2–4 ft
- Port Wing–Sand Island WI + Outer Apostle Islands: 3 AM–4 PM CDT Tuesday — S 5–15 kt, gusts to 25 kt, waves 1–2 ft
- Chequamegon Bay / Sand Island–Bayfield / Oak Point–Saxon Harbor: 3 AM–1 PM CDT Tuesday — S gusts to 25 kt
AFD marine: South Shore, Apostles, and North Shore around Grand Marais see that Tuesday gust window; cold front turns winds northwest Tuesday night (speeds down), then blustery west Wednesday may need more SCAs. HWO: SCAs in effect Tuesday and may be needed Wednesday.
Angler cheat sheet (Mon–Fri)
| Cue | Status |
|---|---|
| Sun night–Mon AM freeze | Was issued; expired ~9 AM Mon |
| Mon inland | Mild mid/upper 60s; light evening showers mainly north of I-94 / Northland |
| Tue | Near 80 south/metro, low 70s Northland; fishable and weirdly warm |
| Wed–Fri | Cooler but seasonal mid/upper 60s; mostly dry |
| Frost later week | Patchy Tue AM Arrowhead possible; more Thu/Fri nights up north (not issued yet) |
| Superior | SCAs Tue Grand Portage + South Shore/Apostles; more possible Wed |
| Flood / severe | None — MPX/DLH quiet on hazardous weather beyond frost/SCA |
No lake water temperatures, ice, stocking or bite claims in this digest. We didn’t find solid public numbers for those, so we’re not inventing any. Anyway: if you’ve got a day to burn on the water, Tuesday’s the carnival. Just don’t leave the life jacket in the truck for Superior — the Small Craft paper is already printed.
