MN Fish On Conditions — Oct 7–12, 2026 (Wed–Mon)
Source: NWS Twin Cities / NWS Duluth
Public NWS/NOAA cues only. No lake temps claimed.
Look, Minnesota. Early October is acting like a guy who swore he packed the cooler for fall and then showed up in flip-flops. The frost talk from earlier this week is gone. Lows sit in the 40s and nobody at the Weather Service is mentioning frost this week. Today is the breezy one, Thursday is the calm one, and Saturday wants to be August for an afternoon. Then the cooldown shows up for Columbus Day, and Monday’s highs end up 20-some degrees below Saturday’s.
Wednesday (Oct 7): breezy, mild, Superior gets the paperwork
- West-northwest winds gust 20–30 mph across much of the state today. NWS Duluth goes as high as 25–35 mph up north.
- Highs: low 70s south and metro (MSP ~72, Rochester ~73), upper 60s central (Brainerd ~67), mid 60s at Duluth.
- A few sprinkles are possible in the Arrowhead, along the border and into northwest Wisconsin this afternoon. Most of you won’t need the hood.
- Twin Cities NWS flags elevated fire weather in western MN today. No Red Flag Warning is issued. Still, be careful with shore fires and cigarette butts on the ramp.
Thursday–Friday (Oct 8–9): the calm middle
- Thursday: lighter northwest winds, seasonable mid 60s (MSP ~67, Duluth ~61). This is the most fishable, least wind-blown day of the stretch.
- Friday: warming back up, low/mid 70s south (MSP ~74), mid/upper 60s north. Southerly winds pick up Friday night. A weak disturbance could brush far southern MN with a stray shower Friday afternoon, but NWS confidence leans toward that staying in Iowa.
- Overnight lows run mid 40s to around 50 in the city forecasts, and inland low spots will be cooler. No frost headlines are in play.
Saturday (Oct 10): the summer cameo, with wind
This is the big change since the live card, which only said 70s.
- Highs reach the low/mid 80s south and metro (MSP ~84, Rochester ~81) and the upper 70s in central MN (Brainerd ~78). Duluth is around 75 and the I-35 corridor into northwest Wisconsin could hit the upper 70s to low 80s. Twin Cities NWS says the forecast may still need nudging warmer, because Tuesday ran hotter than guidance.
- South winds 30–40 mph in gusts are possible as a warm front sweeps through (MPX). The MSP aviation outlook has south-southwest 15–20 kt gusting to 30.
- That adds up to another day of elevated fire weather (MPX). Again, no Red Flag Warning is issued. Check before burning anything.
- For anglers, small water and sheltered bays are your friends Saturday. Big open lakes with a south fetch will be lumpy.
Sunday–Monday (Oct 11–12): front, showers, cooldown
- Sunday: still warm, upper 70s south and metro (MSP ~79), low 70s Brainerd and Duluth, with breezy south-southwest winds. The two NWS offices differ on timing here. Duluth’s discussion brings rain chances in Sunday with the cold front. The point forecasts keep Sunday daytime mostly dry and hold rain off until Sunday night into Monday. Plan on a dry Sunday morning and a so-so Sunday evening.
- Monday (Columbus Day): cooler and showery. Highs drop to the mid/upper 60s south and metro and the mid 50s up north (Duluth ~56, Brainerd ~56), with north winds. Shower chances run ~30–50%, highest in the Northland. The front is expected to stall, so showers may linger into Tuesday. MPX says rain totals look like they’re trending down, so don’t plan around a soaker.
- No hazardous weather is expected inland. Both NWS hazardous weather outlooks are clear through early next week.
Lake Superior (nearshore)
Small Craft Advisories in effect today (issued):
- Most nearshore zones from Grand Marais through the Twin Ports and the South Shore to Chequamegon Bay: 10 AM–8 PM CDT Wednesday. West winds 10–15 kt, gusts to 25 kt, waves 1–2 ft.
- Grand Portage to Grand Marais: 1 PM–8 PM CDT Wednesday, same idea.
- Outer Apostle Islands (beyond 5 NM): 10 AM Wednesday to 1 AM CDT Thursday. West 15–20 kt, gusts to 25 kt, waves 2–4 ft.
Winds and waves ease late tonight and stay light Thursday into Friday. That’s the window to be on the big lake. The Duluth outlook calls for a period of stronger winds Saturday through Monday that will be hazardous for smaller vessels. Nothing is issued yet for the weekend, but expect it.

No lake water temperatures, ice, stocking or bite claims in this digest. We didn’t find solid public numbers for those, so we’re not inventing any. Anyway: Thursday is the quiet gift, Saturday is the windy carnival, and Monday is when the fleece comes back out. The water doesn’t care what month it is. We just try to keep up.
