MN Fish On Conditions — Oct 8–13, 2026 (Thu–Tue)

Source: NWS Twin Cities / NWS Duluth

Public NWS/NOAA cues only. No lake temps claimed.

Look, Minnesota. Yesterday we said no frost this week. The Weather Service has politely corrected us. Frost is likely in spots up north tonight, and again early next week after the cold front. In between, Saturday is going to run hot and windy enough to make your truck door a two-hand operation. Four seasons in six days. The tackle box doesn’t know whether to pack hand warmers or sunscreen, so pack both.

Thursday (Oct 8): quiet, cloudier, cooler

  • Highs low/mid 60s (MSP ~68, Rochester ~67, Brainerd ~63, Duluth ~62), with a few spots in southwest MN near 70. Winds are lighter than Wednesday’s, with west gusts around 20 mph up north (DLH).
  • Partly to mostly cloudy. A spotty sprinkle in the Arrowhead wouldn’t shock anyone.
  • Tonight: light winds under high pressure. NWS Duluth says areas of frost are likely in the Northland, even with some clouds around. Brainerd’s low is ~42 and Duluth ~44, with inland low spots colder. No frost headlines are issued. Treat it as a cover-the-plants night, not a Freeze Warning night.

Friday (Oct 9): transition day

  • Southeast winds pick up and warm air starts flowing back in. Highs reach the low/mid 70s south and metro (MSP ~75, Rochester ~73) and the 60s north (Brainerd ~69, Duluth ~62).
  • A brief shower is possible Friday morning near the Iowa border. Low-end odds, most stay dry.
  • Superior turns easterly with gusts to 15–25 kt. Friday night it shifts south, and the stronger gusts stay near Grand Marais–Grand Portage.

Saturday (Oct 10): hot, dry, windy

This is still the headline of the weekend, and it got hotter and windier since the live card.

  • Highs: MSP point forecast ~88, Rochester ~81, Brainerd ~81, Duluth ~80. MPX says low to mid 80s across its area. NWS Duluth calls it hot, with 80s for many places, low to perhaps mid 80s in northwest Wisconsin.
  • Wind: south gusts 30–40 mph are common, and DLH says gusts near 45 mph are possible, especially along the South Shore. The MSP aviation outlook has south-southwest 15–25 kt gusting to 35.
  • Fire weather: both NWS offices now say near-critical fire weather is likely. The Twin Cities hazardous weather outlook added it for Saturday “across much of the region.” Duluth says critical conditions “can’t be ruled out” if the air trends drier. No Red Flag Warning or Fire Weather Watch is issued yet. Watch for one Friday. No shoreline fires, no ditch burning, and park the boat trailer off the dry grass.
  • Angler read: small, sheltered water. A south wind with that much push will turn any big open lake into a washing machine.

Sunday (Oct 11): still warm, front arrives late

  • Highs are still well above normal (MSP ~81, Rochester ~79, Duluth ~76, Brainerd ~74). Breezy south-southwest winds, with gusts 20–25 kt in the metro.
  • Fire weather stays elevated Sunday afternoon (MPX).
  • The cold front moves through Sunday evening and night. Rain is possible as early as late Sunday afternoon in north-central MN (DLH). Most of the state stays dry through the daytime.

Monday–Tuesday (Oct 12–13): cooler, showery, freezing up north

  • Monday (Columbus Day): cooler with north winds. Highs mid 50s up north (Duluth ~56, Brainerd ~55) and mid/upper 60s south. Shower chances run ~50–55% in the Northland and ~30–35% in the metro and Rochester.
  • Rain amounts: DLH says not substantial, but several places could see a wetting quarter inch or more. MPX says rain chances dipped slightly because the front is slow-moving, plus uncertainty from moisture tied to the remnants of Hurricane Isaias. Don’t plan around a soaker.
  • Leftover light rain or mixed precipitation could linger into Tuesday up north, but drying out is more likely.
  • Frost and freeze return: DLH expects some temperatures to fall below freezing up north Monday night, and more below-freezing temps Tuesday night. Brainerd’s Tuesday-night low is ~37 and Duluth ~40. MPX has lows in the upper 30s to low 40s early next week. No headlines yet. Expect Frost Advisories or Freeze Warnings to be in play.
  • Highs Tuesday: 50s north, upper 50s metro.

Lake Superior (nearshore)

No marine headlines are in effect today (api.weather.gov, ~10:52 AM CDT). Thursday has west gusts to 20 kt, then light and variable winds tonight. Friday is the calm-ish window, as long as easterly gusts of 15–25 kt don’t bother you.

Saturday is the problem day. DLH marine says strong south to southwest winds, especially on the South Shore, with a 40–60% chance of gales there. Small Craft Advisories are likely everywhere else, except possibly parts of the North Shore near Grand Marais. Winds stay strong Saturday night, ease a bit Sunday, then turn northwest to north and blustery again Sunday night into Monday with the front. The DLH outlook says Saturday through Monday will be hazardous for smaller vessels. Nothing is issued yet. Expect it to be.

No lake water temperatures, ice, stocking or bite claims in this digest. We didn’t find solid public numbers for those, so we’re not inventing any. Anyway: Friday is the quiet one, Saturday is the windy furnace, and Monday is when the long underwear starts looking reasonable again. We got the frost call wrong yesterday. That’s why we check every morning.
