MN Fish On Conditions — Oct 12–17, 2026 (Mon–Sat)

Source: NWS Twin Cities / NWS Duluth

Public NWS/NOAA cues only. No lake temps claimed.

Look, Minnesota. The weekend heat was not a rumor. Twin Cities NWS says MSP hit 90 on Sunday, the latest 90 on record in a calendar year, and St. Cloud and Eau Claire also set daily records. Today a cold front is parked right across the state, so Rochester is aiming for the upper 80s while Duluth sits in the mid 50s with a northeast wind. Lake Superior took the cold side personally: Gale Warnings are up right now. Then the week calms down, and Saturday morning brings the first real freeze for a lot of us. It’s a six-day stretch that starts in shorts and ends with an ice scraper.

Monday (Oct 12): one state, two seasons

  • The front is stalled from about Hinckley down along the Minnesota River to Fairmont (MPX, 207 AM).
  • East of it: heat again. Low/mid 80s from southern MN into western WI. Rochester’s point forecast says ~88, MSP ~81. MPX expects another round of record-breaking highs.
  • West and north of it: much cooler, mid/upper 60s in western MN, Brainerd ~64, Duluth ~55 with northeast winds gusting 15–25 mph.
  • Showers and storms: a broken line could develop in western MN around midday and move northeast. MPX has 40–50% chances west to central MN this afternoon. NWS Duluth gives a 30% chance of isolated thunderstorms this afternoon through early Tuesday south of a Brainerd–Duluth line, including northwest WI, with small hail possible in stronger cells. Duluth’s point forecast is ~78% for showers and storms tonight. Totals: 0.10–0.35” in the Northland and ~0.1–0.25” in northern WI.
  • Fog this morning: Dense Fog Advisories for parts of southwest MN (Yellow Medicine, Redwood, Brown, Watonwan, Lincoln, Lyon, Murray, Pipestone, Cottonwood) end between 10 AM and 1 PM.
  • Angler read: southeast MN gets one more summer afternoon. Up north, if you hear thunder, get off the water.

Tuesday–Wednesday (Oct 13–14): the quiet middle

  • The front clears out Monday night and high pressure settles in. It’s dry and seasonable.
  • Tuesday: mid/upper 50s north and central (Duluth ~55, Brainerd ~56), upper 60s to ~70 south (MSP ~66, Rochester ~70).
  • Wednesday: a touch cooler, mid 50s to mid 60s (MSP ~63, Rochester ~65, Duluth and Brainerd ~56).
  • Nights: 30s north, 40s south. Brainerd’s low is ~37 Wednesday night, and MPX has upper 30s returning in central MN by then. Patchy frost is possible in the coldest northern low spots. No headlines.
  • This is the comfortable fishing stretch of the week. Light winds and no rain.

Thursday (Oct 15): rain, mostly south

  • Two lows close in on the region. MPX has increased confidence in rain, with 50–70% chances from southern MN into WI Thursday (Rochester ~62%, MSP ~52%).
  • The north side looks less wet. MPX says confidence in meaningful rain for its northern counties has trended down. Duluth ~32%, Brainerd ~27%.
  • NWS Duluth says the placement and timing of the two lows are still contested, and that decides whether the southern low taps Gulf moisture. Treat the amounts as a moving target.
  • Behind it, northwest winds pick up Thursday night (gusts 10–20 mph, more by Friday).

Friday–Saturday (Oct 16–17): the cold snap

  • Friday: windy and much cooler. NW winds of 15–25 mph north, highs only 50–54 (MSP ~54, Duluth ~50).
  • Friday night into Saturday morning: this is the new headline. MPX says a slice of an arctic airmass could bring the first sub-freezing lows for most of its area Saturday morning. NWS Duluth says lows in the 20s up north. City point lows: Brainerd ~29, MSP ~36 with areas of frost, Rochester ~33, Duluth ~33. Rural spots will run colder.
  • Saturday: sunny and chilly in the 50s (MSP ~59, Rochester ~58). DLH says dry, windy air may bring fire weather concerns Saturday, with humidity possibly in the 30s or even 20s.
  • No Freeze Warning or Frost Advisory is issued yet. Expect them later in the week. If you’ve been babying the garden, Friday evening is the deadline.
  • MPX says the cold snap should be short-lived, with dry, above-normal warmth possible the following weekend into early next week.

Lake Superior (nearshore): Gale Warnings today (ISSUED)

The live card said no gale headlines were issued. That’s changed.

Gale Warning until 7 PM CDT Monday (NWS Duluth):

  • Grand Portage to Grand Marais and the Outer Apostle Islands: NE 15–25 kt, gusts to 35 kt, waves 6–11 ft.
  • Silver Bay to Duluth, Duluth to Port Wing, Port Wing to Sand Island, Sand Island to Bayfield: NE gusts to 35 kt, waves 7–10 ft.
  • Grand Marais to Silver Bay: NE gusts to 30 kt, waves 6–9 ft.

Small Craft Advisory until 7 PM CDT Monday: Chequamegon Bay and Oak Point to Saxon Harbor, NE gusts to 30 kt, waves 5–8 ft.

DLH marine says gales taper off this evening, but hazardous small-craft conditions last into Tuesday afternoon while the waves settle. More Small Craft Advisories may follow. The DLH outlook brings hazardous small-craft conditions back Friday, with gales possible. Nothing is issued for Friday yet.

Today is not a big-lake day. Breakwalls and piers aren’t either, with waves that size.

Fire weatherPossible again Saturday up north (dry and windy)

No lake water temperatures, ice, stocking or bite claims in this digest. We didn’t find solid public numbers for those, so we’re not inventing any. The big uncertainties are Thursday’s rain track and exactly how cold Saturday morning gets. Check for Freeze Warnings Thursday and Friday. Anyway: southeast MN gets one last summer afternoon, Superior gets a day off from boats, and Saturday you’ll want the real gloves.
