Look, Minnesota. This is the week the furnace and the boat both get a workout. Today is a gray, forgettable Wednesday. Thursday the south finally gets a real rain. Friday the wind blows hard enough that Superior gets an actual Gale Watch, and a couple of snowflakes might show up in the Arrowhead like a cousin who wasn’t invited but brought a hotdish anyway. Then Saturday morning brings the first true freeze for a lot of the state. By Sunday it’s sunny and mid 60s again, like nothing happened. October has range.
Wednesday (Oct 14): gray, then a little brighter
- Stratus breaks up slowly this afternoon. It’s dry, with light north winds.
- Highs: MSP ~59, Rochester ~59, Brainerd ~54, Duluth ~54.
- Tonight is chilly up north, with Brainerd ~35 and Duluth ~39. Patchy frost is possible in cold spots. No headlines.
- It’s a calm fishing day, just not a pretty one.
Thursday (Oct 15): real rain south, lighter north
- A storm system tracks south of us, and Minnesota sits on the northern edge of its rain.
- Southern MN: MPX says more than 0.5” is likely, with at least half the model runs showing it. Rochester’s point forecast is ~97% Thursday and ~86% Thursday night.
- Twin Cities and Eau Claire: this is the uncertain line. Some models push the half-inch amounts up to the metro and some don’t. MPX treats the wetter version as the less likely outcome. MSP ~67%, rain starting around mid-morning.
- Northland: the track has nudged north (DLH). Northwest Wisconsin now looks like a tenth to a quarter inch or more. MN north of the metro gets lighter, spottier rain (Duluth ~63%, Brainerd ~41%).
- Highs are a damp mid 50s everywhere.
- This is MPX’s main rain chance until mid to late next week.
Friday (Oct 16): windy, cold, maybe snowflakes
- Cold air pours in behind the system. Northwest winds gust 25–35 mph across the Northland (DLH), especially from the Twin Ports up the North Shore. MSP gets northwest gusts to ~30 kt.
- Highs are only low/mid 50s (MSP ~54, Rochester ~53, Brainerd ~51, Duluth ~50).
- Snowflakes: wraparound showers Friday morning could mix in a few snowflakes in the Arrowhead. DLH also expects lake-enhanced showers on the South Shore Friday, maybe with a flake or two. It’s low impact, mostly something to talk about at the gas station.
- Fire weather: drier air works in Friday afternoon. Humidity 30–40% with 15–20 mph gusts as the wind eases (DLH).
Friday night–Saturday morning: the freeze (look-ahead)
- MPX’s key message: widespread frost, possible widespread freeze. Its hazardous weather outlook says frost is likely and a freeze is possible Friday night into Saturday morning. MPX guidance shows a freeze possible to likely across most of the region, except the urban core of the Twin Cities.
- Point lows Saturday morning: Brainerd ~31, Rochester ~33 with “widespread frost,” Duluth ~33, MSP ~36 with areas of frost. Rural low spots and river valleys will run colder. The card’s earlier ”20s up north” is softer now, with city points around the low 30s. Treat the 20s as the cold-pocket scenario.
- No Freeze Watch, Freeze Warning or Frost Advisory is issued yet. Expect headlines Thursday or Friday. Friday evening is the deadline for anything you still care about outdoors.
Saturday (Oct 17): bright, dry, breezy
- After the cold start, it warms fast under a building ridge. Highs low 60s (MSP ~61, Brainerd ~61, Rochester ~60, Duluth ~58).
- Southwest winds pick up, gusting 20–30 mph up north (DLH) and ~25 kt at MSP.
- Fire weather: DLH says afternoon humidity near 25% plus those gusts could mean near-critical to critical fire weather up north. No Red Flag Warning is issued yet. Skip burning, and keep hot trailer hubs off dry grass.
Sunday–Monday (Oct 18–19): back to nice
- Sunny and warmer, mid 60s (MSP ~65 Sunday and ~67 Monday, Rochester ~64–67, Duluth ~62, Brainerd ~64).
- Sunday brings a mostly dry cold front up north with little rain. The ridge then holds, and MPX expects highs back into the low 70s by midweek next week, about 10 degrees above normal.
- No meaningful rain is expected until mid to late next week.
- Monday morning is chilly up north again (Brainerd ~38, Duluth ~42). It feels like October, but kind.
Lake Superior (nearshore): Gale Watch issued
Gale Watch — late Thursday night through Friday afternoon (NWS Duluth, all western nearshore zones: Grand Portage through the North Shore, Two Harbors to Duluth, Duluth to Port Wing, the South Shore, Chequamegon Bay to Saxon Harbor, and the Outer Apostles):
- North winds 20–30 kt, gusts up to 40 kt, waves 5–8 ft possible.
- DLH marine: the strongest window is Friday morning to about midday. Winds ease Friday afternoon and evening.
Before that: winds ease today, and southwest gusts reach 15–20 kt Thursday afternoon. After: the Duluth outlook expects another round of gusty winds and high waves Saturday. Nothing is issued for Saturday yet.
Friday is a no-go for the big lake. Thursday daytime and Sunday look like the better marine windows.

No lake water temperatures, ice, stocking or bite claims in this digest. We didn’t find solid public numbers for those, so we’re not inventing any. The big uncertainties are how far north Thursday’s heavier rain reaches, whether the Gale Watch becomes a warning, and exactly how cold Saturday morning gets. Check for Freeze Warnings and a Red Flag Warning before the weekend. Anyway: Thursday is a raincoat day, Friday is a stay-off-Superior day, Saturday morning is the ice-scraper morning, and Sunday is the reward.
