MN Fish On Conditions — Oct 15–19, 2026 (Thu–Mon)
Source: NWS Twin Cities / NWS Duluth
Public NWS/NOAA cues only. No lake temps claimed.
Look, Minnesota. Today feels like a November rain that showed up a few weeks early: gray, steady and in no hurry. The heavier stuff now runs right through the Twin Cities, not just the far south. Tonight the wind wakes up hard enough to earn a Wind Advisory out west. Superior gets a Gale Warning Friday morning, and the Duluth office says the lake might do it again Saturday night. Saturday morning is the frosty one. Then the weekend dries out so fast that fire weather is the new worry. Busy week to be a weather radio.
Thursday (Oct 15): all-day rain, heaviest southeast
- Twin Cities NWS (554 AM CDT) has the main rain band along a Fairmont–Mankato–Twin Cities line. 0.5–1” is expected southeast of that line, which now includes the southeast metro and western Wisconsin. Totals drop off to the northwest.
- Point forecasts: MSP ~100% today and ~85% tonight; Rochester ~100% today and ~99% tonight; Brainerd ~49%; Duluth ~67%.
- Northland: NWS Duluth says northwest Wisconsin gets most of it, 0.25–0.75”, with more than 0.5” in the Gogebic Range. Most of northern MN gets lighter, spottier amounts.
- No thunder. It’s stratiform rain, and SPC doesn’t even have general thunder in the forecast.
- Highs stall around 50–53. Rain takes a short break late this afternoon and evening, then wraparound showers come back overnight into Friday morning.
- Angler read: a slow, wet day. Rain gear on, and mind slick ramps.
Thursday night (Oct 15–16): wind turns on
- Wind Advisory — 6 PM Thursday to 6 AM Friday (NWS Grand Forks) for Norman, Clay, Wilkin, West Polk, Kittson and West Marshall in northwest MN. Northwest winds 20–30 mph, gusts up to 45 mph.
- Elsewhere, northwest winds ramp up overnight. MPX has gusts of 25–35 kt (strongest in western MN). DLH has 25–35 mph across the Northland and up to 45 mph near Lake Superior late tonight into Friday.
Friday (Oct 16): windy, cold, flakes possible up north
- Highs only around 50 (MSP ~50, Rochester ~48, Brainerd ~50, Duluth ~50). North-northwest winds gust ~30 kt at MSP, easing toward evening.
- Leftover morning showers: Rochester ~58%, MSP ~35%.
- Snowflakes: a few may mix in across far northern MN, the Arrowhead or the South Shore Friday morning. DLH expects no impacts. It’s mostly something to talk about at the bait shop.
- DLH also says Friday morning lows stay mostly above freezing up north under clouds. The cold night is Friday night.
Friday night–Saturday morning: the freeze
- MPX’s key message now says widespread frost/freeze is expected. A freeze looks likely everywhere outside the urban core of the Twin Cities, and frost is still likely even in the core.
- Point lows: Rochester ~31 (widespread frost), Brainerd ~31, MSP ~33 (widespread frost), Duluth ~34. Rural lows and river bottoms will run colder.
- No Freeze Warning or Frost Advisory is issued yet as of ~9:17 AM. Expect headlines later today or Friday. Friday evening is the deadline to cover or haul in anything you care about.
Saturday–Sunday (Oct 17–18): bright, dry, gusty
- It warms fast after the cold start. Highs upper 50s to ~60 Saturday (MSP ~60, Brainerd ~59, Rochester ~57, Duluth ~57). Sunday reaches the mid 60s (MSP ~66, Brainerd ~65, Rochester ~64, Duluth ~63).
- Southwest winds gust 20–30 mph up north, and ~25 kt at MSP both days.
- Fire weather: the Duluth hazardous weather outlook flags increased fire weather risk Saturday and Sunday. Afternoon humidity drops to 25–30% with gusty southwest winds. Near-critical to critical conditions are possible Saturday, and DLH says fire weather headlines may be needed. Nothing is issued yet. Skip burning, and keep hot trailer hubs off dry grass.
- Sunday’s cold front passes north and stays mostly dry, with a few clouds.
Monday (Oct 19) and beyond: warm and dry
- Sunny, mid 60s (MSP ~67, Rochester ~66, Brainerd ~64, Duluth ~61). Light winds, so this is a solid day on the water.
- MPX expects a ridge to hold through midweek, with highs in the mid/upper 60s, about 10+ degrees above normal, and few if any rain chances. MPX says October is on pace to be one of the warmest on record, but anything can change in fall.
Lake Superior (nearshore): gales Friday, maybe again Saturday night
Gale Warning — 4 AM to 1 PM CDT Friday (NWS Duluth, all western nearshore zones):
- Grand Portage to Two Harbors to Duluth (North Shore): north 20–30 kt, gusts to 40 kt, waves 2–5 ft.
- Duluth to Port Wing, the South Shore, Chequamegon Bay to Saxon Harbor, and the Outer Apostles: north 20–30 kt, gusts to 40 kt, waves 6–9 ft.
Gales ease Friday evening. Then the DLH outlook expects another round of gusty winds and high waves Saturday morning through Sunday evening, with southwest gales of 35–40 kt possible Saturday evening through early Sunday afternoon. Nothing is issued for that second round yet.
Friday morning and Saturday night into Sunday are off-limits for the big lake. Monday is the best window, once things settle.

No lake water temperatures, ice, stocking or bite claims in this digest. We didn’t find solid public numbers for those, so we’re not inventing any. Things still in play: whether Freeze Warnings and fire weather headlines come out before Saturday, and whether the second gale round on Superior verifies. Check weather.gov before you launch. Anyway: today is a raincoat day, Friday is a stay-off-Superior day, Saturday morning you’ll want the ice scraper, and Monday should be the best day of the stretch.
