MN Fish On Conditions — Oct 16–21, 2026 (Fri–Wed)

Source: NWS Twin Cities / NWS Duluth

Okay, Minnesota. Thursday’s rain has moved out, the wind is cleaning up after it, and tonight the state gets its first real freeze of the season. The headlines we said were coming are now out. Then the weather does a full 180: by Tuesday the metro could be in the low 70s, about 15 to 20 degrees above normal. Scrape the windshield Saturday morning and wear a T-shirt by Wednesday.

Friday (Oct 16): windy and clearing

  • The last showers end this morning from northwest to southeast. A little lake-enhanced rain could hang on along the South Shore into early afternoon.
  • Northwest gusts of 35–40 mph are common this morning, with a few up to ~45 mph in western and southern MN (NWS Twin Cities). Winds peak around midday, ease through the afternoon and go light this evening.
  • Highs only 47–52 (MSP ~52, Brainerd ~48, Rochester ~47, Duluth ~47). Sunny by afternoon.
  • Angler read: a lumpy morning on big open water. It’s better after lunch, but cold.

Friday night–Saturday morning: frost and freeze

The headlines are out:

  • Freeze Warning, 1–9 AM Saturday (NWS Twin Cities): Blue Earth, Brown, Carver, Chisago, Dakota, Faribault, Freeborn, Goodhue, Isanti, Kanabec, Le Sueur, Martin, McLeod, Mille Lacs, Nicollet, Redwood, Renville, Rice, Scott, Sibley, Steele, Waseca and Watonwan, plus west-central Wisconsin (Polk, St. Croix, Pierce, Barron, Rusk, Dunn, Pepin, Chippewa, Eau Claire). Lows in the upper 20s to low 30s.
  • Freeze Warning, 1–9 AM Saturday (NWS La Crosse): southeast MN, including Wabasha, Dodge, Olmsted, Winona, Mower, Fillmore and Houston. Lows as low as 26. Rochester ~31 with widespread frost.
  • Freeze Warning (NWS Sioux Falls): Cottonwood, Nobles and Jackson, as low as 29. Lyon, Lincoln, Murray, Pipestone and Rock are under a Freeze Watch.
  • Frost Advisory, 1–8 AM Saturday: Hennepin, Anoka, Ramsey and Washington. The urban heat should keep the core above 32, but lows in the mid 30s plus light winds still mean frost (MSP ~36).
  • Freeze Watch (NWS Twin Cities): Benton, Chippewa, Douglas, Kandiyohi, Lac qui Parle, Meeker, Morrison, Pope, Sherburne, Stearns, Stevens, Swift, Todd, Wright and Yellow Medicine. A southwest breeze late tonight may keep temperatures just above freezing there. That’s a close call.
  • Up north (NWS Duluth): frost and a widespread freeze into Saturday morning. Lows reach the 20s in colder spots, ~31 at Brainerd and ~34 at Duluth. There are no frost or freeze headlines in Duluth’s area.
  • Angler read: check for frost on the dock boards and launch ramps at sunrise, and that first step onto the boat. Unhook water lines, cover the livewell plumbing if you’re particular about it, and bring gloves.

Saturday–Sunday (Oct 17–18): sunny, dry and gusty

  • It warms up fast after the cold start. Saturday reaches the upper 50s (MSP ~59, Rochester ~57, Brainerd ~57, Duluth ~55). Sunday reaches 60–65 (MSP ~65, Rochester ~63, Brainerd ~63, Duluth ~60).
  • Southwest gusts of 25–30 mph both days, a bit gentler around Brainerd on Sunday.
  • Fire weather: NWS Twin Cities flags elevated conditions both days, with humidity in the 30s and gusty winds, especially where Thursday’s rain missed. NWS Duluth has near-critical conditions possible Saturday and Sunday, though guidance has gotten a little more humid (afternoon lows ~30–40%) and it isn’t expecting fire headlines. Nothing is issued. Still, skip burning, and don’t park a hot truck on dry grass.

Monday–Wednesday (Oct 19–21): warm, quiet, maybe a few showers late

  • Monday: sunny and light winds. Highs ~58–65 (MSP ~65, Rochester ~65, Brainerd ~61, Duluth ~58). This is the calmest day of the stretch.
  • Tuesday: sunny and warmer. MSP ~69, Rochester ~68, Brainerd ~64, Duluth ~57 with an east wind off the lake.
  • Wednesday: MSP ~72, Rochester ~71, Brainerd ~66, Duluth ~62. A weak disturbance brings a 20% chance of light, scattered showers Wednesday into Wednesday night. Dry is still more likely.
  • NWS Twin Cities expects a big ridge to keep highs in the low to mid 70s from Tuesday on, about 15–20 degrees above normal. More rain chances could come next weekend if the western trough moves in. That’s far enough out to be uncertain.

Lake Superior (nearshore)

Gale Warning until 1 PM CDT today (NWS Duluth, all western nearshore zones):

  • North Shore (Grand Portage to Duluth): north 20–25 kt, gusts to 40 kt, waves 1–4 ft.
  • South Shore, Duluth to Saxon Harbor, and the Outer Apostles: north 20–30 kt, gusts to 40 kt, waves 6–9 ft.

A Small Craft Advisory will likely follow into early this evening. On Saturday winds turn southwest, and the Duluth outlook expects gusts of 25–35 kt from Saturday afternoon through Sunday afternoon. Gusts over 30 kt are ~70% likely, but reaching full gale force (34 kt+) is less certain, especially on the North Shore. Small Craft Advisories are likely, and a Gale Warning is possible, mainly Saturday afternoon and evening, strongest along the South Shore. That’s milder than Thursday’s outlook, which had 35–40 kt gales.

Best Superior window: Monday–Tuesday, once the southwest wind settles.

No lake water temperatures, ice, stocking or bite claims in this digest. We didn’t find solid public numbers for those, so we’re not inventing any. Still in play: whether the Freeze Watch counties actually drop below 32, whether Superior’s weekend winds reach Small Craft Advisory or full gale strength, and how dry it gets on Saturday afternoon. Check weather.gov before you launch. Saturday morning is frosty, Sunday is breezy, and Monday through Wednesday look like the best days of the stretch.
