MN Fish On Conditions — Oct 19–25, 2026 (Mon–Sun)

Minnesota, settle in. The weather has gone quiet on us. A big omega block (picture a giant traffic jam in the jet stream) is parked over the middle of the country, and its warm side sits right over Minnesota. That means sunshine, light winds and late-October highs that would look normal in early September. The Twin Cities office even says its forecast highs may be too low, because Sunday blew past the warmest guidance by up to 7 degrees. Near the end of the week the block finally breaks down. A cold front crawls in from the west for the weekend, bringing some showers and a cooldown. It isn’t a big storm, and the timing is still shaky.
Monday–Wednesday (Oct 19–21): sunny, light winds, dry
- Monday: highs mid to upper 60s (MSP ~67, Rochester ~66, Brainerd ~63, Duluth ~59). A little morning fog around Brainerd burns off quickly. A dry cold front slips through the Northland tonight without much fuss.
- Tuesday: MSP ~68, Rochester ~67, Brainerd ~63, Duluth ~62.
- Wednesday: MSP ~71, Rochester ~70, Brainerd ~68, Duluth ~66. The small Wednesday shower chance from last week is gone. Point forecasts are now 0–2%.
- Lake breeze: NWS Duluth says afternoon lake breezes will keep the immediate Superior shoreline cooler, closer to normal. A sweatshirt in Duluth and short sleeves in Brainerd on the same afternoon.
- Dry air: up north, afternoon humidity may drop to ~25% today, possibly the low 20s if the air mixes deeper (NWS Duluth). Winds stay very light, so critical fire weather isn’t expected and nothing is issued. Humidity recovers some on Tuesday as southerly winds return. Still a good week to skip the burn barrel.
Thursday (Oct 22): the warm peak
- MSP ~75, Rochester ~71, Brainerd ~71, Duluth ~62 (east wind off the lake). Sunny and dry.
- NWS Twin Cities says this week’s highs were nudged toward the warm end of guidance and may still be conservative. A few degrees higher wouldn’t surprise anyone. We’re not calling a record, and NWS isn’t either, but October has been running very warm.
- Angler read: about the nicest late-October weather you’ll get. Wear sunscreen, and yes, that’s a strange thing to tell a Minnesotan in late October.
Friday (Oct 23): breezy southeast winds, clouds build
- A low over the northern Rockies and southern Canada tightens the wind. MSP sees southeast gusts of 25–30 kt. Brainerd has SE 15–20 mph, Rochester SE 9–15 mph and Duluth SE 5–15 mph.
- Highs still warm: MSP ~70, Rochester ~68, Brainerd ~66, Duluth ~64. Partly sunny.
- Low shower chances begin Friday afternoon or night, mainly west and north (Brainerd ~32% Friday night, MSP and Duluth ~21%).
Saturday–Sunday (Oct 24–25): slow cold front, scattered showers, cooler
- NWS Duluth: ~40% chance of rain Friday into the weekend. It falls as rain, not snow, since it’s still too warm for that, and widespread or heavy amounts are not expected.
- Saturday: still mild ahead of the front (MSP ~70, Rochester ~69, Duluth ~66, Brainerd ~65), with ~20–37% shower chances. Breezy south to southwest winds, 15–20 mph up north.
- Sunday: behind the front. MSP ~61, Rochester ~64, Duluth ~56, Brainerd ~55, with a few leftover showers early. Lows drop back to the upper 30s to 40s, Brainerd ~38 Sunday night.
- Big caveat: NWS Twin Cities says there’s large spread in how fast the front moves and how far east it gets before it washes out. Omega blocks are notoriously slow to break down. Treat the weekend shower timing as a rough guess and recheck Thursday.
- NWS Duluth says temperatures should return to near normal for late October behind the front, which likely ends the long warm stretch.
Lake Superior (nearshore)
- No marine headlines, and the Duluth outlook has a low chance of widespread hazardous weather through Sunday.
- Light and variable to northeast winds today and Tuesday, with gusts to ~20 kt at the head of the lake in the afternoon and evening. Southwest winds on Wednesday. NWS Duluth says the stagnant pattern isn’t expected to bring hazardous conditions for small vessels this workweek.
- Point forecasts have Duluth winds picking up to S ~15 mph Friday night into Saturday as the front nears. Watch the weekend marine forecast. Nothing is flagged yet.
- Best Superior window: Monday–Thursday.

No lake water temperatures, ice, stocking or bite claims in this digest. We didn’t find solid public numbers for those, so we’re not inventing any. Still uncertain: how warm Thursday gets, and when (and whether) the weekend front brings real rain. Check weather.gov before you launch. In short, fish Monday through Thursday while the weather is this calm, plan around a breezy Friday, and pack a rain shell for the weekend.
