98th Annual Fisherman's Picnic — Grand Marais
Grand Marais throws its 98th Fisherman's Picnic Aug. 5–8, 2027: Lions Club herring fishburgers, a fish toss, fireworks over the harbor, and a Sunday parade on the North Shore.
The North Shore’s oldest excuse to eat a fish on a bun is back. The 98th Annual Fisherman’s Picnic fills downtown Grand Marais Thursday through Sunday, August 5–8, 2027, with Harbor Park and Bear Tree Park doing the hosting. The Grand Marais Lions Club runs it as its big annual fundraiser, and its own listing starts things Wednesday evening, Aug. 4, at 5 p.m.
The headliner is the Lions Club fishburger: locally caught Lake Superior herring on a bun. The organizers say to try “one (or six).” We support that math. Around it you get live music in Harbor Park, Crazy Days sidewalk sales, a craft show, food trucks, bingo, and contests including loon calling, rock skipping, cutest puppy, and a fish toss. Fireworks go over the harbor Saturday night, the parade rolls Sunday afternoon, and the Fisherman’s Picnic 5K trail run/walk is Saturday morning at Pincushion. Buy the collectible button, because that’s your pass to the weekend events.
It’s a town festival, not a derby. But it’s been celebrating the folks who fish this big cold lake for more than 90 years, and the herring is the real thing. Bring a sweatshirt, because August on the Shore does whatever it wants.
