Last week the Cass muskies were sitting out deep, hanging off sharp breaks like they were too good for the rest of us. This week they came back up. The column says the shallow fish look like the active ones now.
Walleyes: one depth, one minnow
- Depth: 12 to 14 feet on Cass.
- Bait: a redtail minnow on a live-bait rig or a jig.
That’s a lot tighter than our Oct. 14 card, which had two separate lanes. Now there’s one, and it’s right in the middle.
Muskies: try the weeds
The column says muskies seem to be more active shallow than deep. It’s a read on how the fish are acting, not a sure thing. Rubber baits are raising fish on the weedy bars and humps on Cass and Pike Bay. “Raising” means fish following and showing themselves, so don’t read it as boats full of them.
Perch and panfish
- Perch: the bigger ones are coming off sand flats in under 6 feet on Cass.
- Nearby lakes: bluegills at 3 to 6 feet, and crappies in the 12-foot weeds on Grace, Pughole and Kitchi.
Duck note
A few puddle ducks are still getting shot around the area, but the column says no new birds worth mentioning came through this past week.
Fine print
This is one weekly newspaper column, with the Cass part coming from a local resort. It gives no fish counts or sizes, and we didn’t add any. The muskie part is the resort’s impression of what fish are doing, so treat it that way.
