Big water had a busy mid-September week on the public calendar — a veterans charter event on the south shore and a multispecies derby up at the Angle. We’re summarizing the Sept. 9, 2026 Lake of the Woods MN tourism write-up (three-area snapshot), not rewriting their brochure as our own novel.
South shore / Big Traverse
Tourism says the 13th Annual Pay It Forward Veterans Event put 99 anglers on charters for two days. Their report: limits were common, with walleyes up to about 29.5 inches. Presentation that kept working for the charters: drift or slow-troll spinner-and-crawler when the wind died. Blade colors called out in that note: five of diamonds, firetiger, and gold with red or pink. Some boats also covered the basin with crankbaits on downriggers.
Rainy River
Still a mixed bag on the river, with the fall plot thickening. Tourism says schools of emerald shiners are beginning to show upriver, and walleyes are expected to follow that bait (their seasonal read, not a fish we counted). Same note flags lake sturgeon activity as something that usually ramps as water cools and days shorten — seasonal foreshadowing from them, not a fish we counted.
Northwest Angle
As part of Buoy Bash, the Max multispecies derby (best muskie + best walleye per team each day) put muskies mostly in the 45–49.5 inch band and walleyes to about 28.5 inches, per the tourism report — a public scoreboard snapshot of how strong that island country still looks. They also say muskie interest should keep climbing into fall among the islands.
Regs (from that tourism note — verify yourself)
Combined walleye/sauger 6 fish, up to 4 walleyes; release walleyes 19.5–28.0 inches; one over 28.0 allowed. 2026 Minnesota license required. Always re-check current DNR before you keep anything.
Outdoor News ran a Sept. 8 LOTW teaser with similar size numbers; the rest sits behind a paywall, so we didn’t invent body copy from it.
Labeled outlook
Tourism is pointing at a coming jig bite and a fuller Rainy shiner parade — that’s their seasonal tease, not today’s exact counts from us.
