Rapala
The wounded-minnow that started arguments in more Minnesota tackle boxes than we can count. Twitch it, drown it, or just believe in it.

Upper Red is shallow and wide open, and when the wind gets going out there, it feels like trying to fish a washing machine. That’s how most of this past week went. Not many boats went out, and the column says the wind is the main reason.
That’s it. Short report. Watch the forecast, pick a calm stretch, and keep the boat near shore where the fish are supposed to be anyway.
Our Oct. 1 card had cranks at 4 to 7 feet along shore. This week it’s a jig and minnow, and a touch deeper.
This is one weekly newspaper column, with the Upper Red part coming from a local resort. It’s based on a quiet week with few anglers, and it gives no fish counts or sizes. We didn’t add any. Don’t head out in a small boat when Red is rolling.
The matching tray
Same hardware we already point at on the species and gear pages. Not a secret, not a bite chart — just the stuff that lives in Minnesota boats.

Johnson
The original weedless wonder still earns a seat in Minnesota pike boats. Cast it through pads and cabbage, keep a steady wobble, and tip it with a trailer if the fish want a little more meal. Gold 3/4 is the listing we can actually buy today.

Clam
Minnesota ice-house tungsten with a flat tie-eye that puts the hook where soft-mouthed crappies keep their secrets. Small, dense, and weirdly charming in Wonderbread paint.
