The Lake Went Away — Now Kittson’s Getting the Piers Back

After Lake Bronson was drawn down in 2024 for a full dam rebuild — piers yanked, fishing shut — new ADA and dam-side fishing piers are staged on the beach while the lake slowly refills. Usable fishing is still aimed at 2027, with aggressive restocking planned once the water is open again.

Some Minnesota fishing stories start with a livewell full of walleyes. This one starts with an empty basin on the Canadian border and a pile of brand-new fishing piers waiting on the sand like somebody left Christmas under a tarp.

In September 2024 the Minnesota DNR drew Lake Bronson down so Ames Construction could replace an 85-year-old high-hazard dam — undersized spillway, seepage through the embankment, the whole “we should probably fix this before it becomes a bigger story” checklist. Both public accesses closed. Every fishing pier came out. For a stretch there was no fishing in the park at all, which is a hard sentence to write about a place people have been casting for generations. (Minnesota DNR)

This week the Kittson County Enterprise caught the next chapter on camera: new fishing piers staged on the beach at Lake Bronson State Park while the lake slowly refills and Ames keeps working the new dam and seepage cutoff wall. One pier is headed near the beach for ADA access. The other lands in a new spot by the rebuilt dam. The water is coming back. The docks are waiting their turn. Don’t pack the rods for tomorrow morning, though. Ames project engineer Tyler Doll told the Enterprise back in June the plan was to start refilling after the Fourth of July — and even in a perfect year, fill in 2026 still meant the lake stays off-limits while construction finishes. Officials have been pointing anglers at 2027 for usable water. The DNR says once the dam is replaced, they’ll aggressively stock and monitor the fishery recovery. Bonding put roughly $24 million behind the rebuild so Kittson County isn’t stuck with a muddy memory of a lake. (Kittson County Enterprise, June 17, 2026; Minnesota DNR)

Campfire takeaway: far northwestern Minnesota spent two years watching its fishing hole become a jobsite. The piers on the beach aren’t a photo op for a bite chart — they’re the receipt that the water, the ADA dock, and the next kid who wants to cast from shore are getting written back into the park. Lake Bronson isn’t open yet. It’s coming.
