White Bear Lake

The east-metro big lake, about 2,400 acres and 83 feet deep at its deepest. The DNR manages it for walleye and muskie, and the bass and panfish keep showing up for the people who aren't.

Usual suspects: Walleye, Muskie, Northern pike, Largemouth bass, Smallmouth bass, Panfish

White Bear Lake sits on the line between Ramsey and Washington counties. That makes it the east metro’s answer whenever somebody west of the river won’t stop bringing up Minnetonka. It’s roughly 2,400 acres and drops to 83 feet, and the DNR puts walleye and muskie at the top of its management list.

DNR surveys call northern pike, largemouth bass, bluegill and crappie above average in numbers, and say some of the bass and bluegill run bigger. Walleye numbers are about average, and the DNR stocks them every year. Muskies are average too, with a few larger fish in the mix. Smallmouth and perch are on the light side. That’s just what the place is like. We’re not going to make up a dock that “always has one.” If a real report shows up, it goes in Reports, and the volunteer pontoon crew gets its due over in Stories.

What’s happening

We are watching the calendar. Nothing on the books for this water that we can stand behind. When a real lake day shows up, it will land here — not a daydream with a date slapped on it. See all of Events.

Mepps

The classic inline that muskie anglers argue about the way people argue about pizza toppings. Slow-roll early, burn it later — the blade starts spinning without needing a TED Talk.

The original weedless wonder still earns a seat in Minnesota pike boats. Cast it through pads and cabbage, keep a steady wobble, and tip it with a trailer if the fish want a little more meal. Gold 3/4 is the listing we can actually buy today.

Storm

Pre-rigged soft shad with holographic flash and that WildEye stare that looks slightly judgmental. Cast it along weed edges and riprap when Minnesota bass want a baitfish without the drama of live bait.
